Choosing the Right Credit Card Machine

People are increasingly using credit cards instead of cash for financial transactions. For businesses this is an important thing to know because you need to be able to accept the form of payment that customers use most. In order to accept credit card payments, you need to purchase a credit card machine. In order to choose the right machine for your business, there are some things for you to decide before you shop around.

Credit card transactions can be placed in two ways. The most common way is to swipe the card through the credit card machine. In order for the card to be swiped, the cardholder must be present. Credit card transactions can also take place through the merchant or cashier keying the card number into a credit card machine. You will need to decide which, or both, of these transactions you will be completing.

A printer will be necessary for the business' and the customer's records. The kind of printer you use with your credit card machine will depend on the number of credit card transactions you plan on having monthly. A dot matrix printer can be used when there relatively few transactions will be taking place. This kind of printer is more likely to fail than other kinds because of the amount of moving parts. An alternative is the thermal printer. This kind of printer is faster and better equipped to handle a large number of transactions.

You will need to decide if you will be accepting debit cards. If so, you will need to add a PIN pad so that customers are able to key in the PIN for their debit card. A final decision factor is whether you will have a credit card machine that works through a traditional phone line or a wireless terminal. If you operate a mobile business, the wireless terminal might be the best choice for you.

There are many brands of credit card machines. Make sure that you are familiar with the needs of your business in order to make an educated decision for your business.
